Dubai Mall And Festival Marina Showcase Renewed Potential

The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination, welcomed a record five million visitors during the recent one-month Dubai Shopping Festival (DFS).

In addition, Emaar Malls Group – a major sponsor of the festival – reported strong visitor numbers and sales across its key retail properties including Dubai Marina Mall, Souk Al Bahar and Gold & Diamond Park.

Nasser Rafi, chief executive officer of Emaar Malls Group, said the 15th edition of Dubai Shopping Festival and the success of the Dubai Mall’s visitation had established a benchmark for retail, highlighting the instrumental role played by the festival in driving tourism and retail in Dubai. The development oif Burj Khalifa and the new Dubai hotel apartments have also contributed to the increase in tourism and retail.

He added: “The Dubai Mall was the city’s key shopping, entertainment and leisure destination during DSF, underscored by the record five million visitor footfall – and thus setting a new precedent for shopping malls across the region and internationally.”
The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination with 1,200 retail outlets.

In related news, Mourjan Marinas IGY, which provides development and management solutions for marina lifestyle destinations, has renewed its long term partnership with Dubai Festival City to continue its management of Festival Marina.

The company was formed late last year to drive the growth of marina development throughout the Middle East. Mourjan Marinas IGY said the new contract will allow Dubai Festival City to continue to utilise its design, engineering, management and marketing expertise “to benefit one of Dubai’s most stunning waterfronts”. The waterfront has also been instrumental in increasing the local value of the Dubai property market.

The DSF Office has announced dates for the 2010 edition of Dubai Shopping Festival and Dubai Summer Surprises as it presents a preview of DSF 2010 to a global audience at the World Travel Market 2009, which begins today (November 9), and goes on till November 12 in London. While DSF 2010 will begin on January 28 and go on till February 28, Dubai Summer Surprises 2010 will be held from June 17 to August 7.

The participation in WTM is part of DSF Office’s efforts in highlighting the upcoming and a landmark 15th edition of DSF, and to promote the festival as one among the world’s leading shopping and family entertainment events to a wider global audience. The DSF Office is participating under the auspices of the Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing department (DTCM).

6th Dubai International Film Festival 2009

The Dubai International Film Festival, the foremost event in Dubai’s cultural calendar, today announced the dates for its sixth edition, to run from December 9 to 16, 2009.

One Man Village and Amreeka, films supported by the Dubai Film Connection made it to Berlinale and Sundance Film Festivals respectively. 2008 Film line-up included award winning and critically successful productions such as Slumdog Millionaire, Rachel Getting Married, Gomorra and The Wrestler.
The 2008 festival built on the successes of the past years and introduced strong new initiatives, such as the revolutionary Dubai Film Market, a state of the art content-trading platform that spurred several high-level agreements between regional and international film professionals.

The Muhr Awards for Excellence in Arab Cinema, in its third successful year, gained a sibling prize in 2008, the Muhr AsiaAfrica Competition, which garnered 450 entries in its first year. Prize amounts for both segments amounted to almost USD 576, 000, among the most generous cash prizes in international film festivals.

More than 900 films from the Arab world, Asia and Africa will compete for the region’s leading film honours, the 2009 Muhr Awards, during the sixth edition of the Dubai International Film Festival this December.

The entries are from more than 60 nations across Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia and Europe. The documentaries, short films and feature films will compete for 28 prizes in acting, cinematography, editing, music and scriptwriting in addition to jury and general excellence awards.

Together, the DIFF Muhr Arab and Muhr AsiaAfrica Awards offer more than US$575,000 in prize money, in addition to the acclaim of a prestigious international jury.

The Muhr AsiaAfrica competition, currently in its second year, received over 513 entries in the three categories.
